Council approved REVIEW OF IMPACTS AND ADVOCACY RELATED TO UPDATED STATE FIRE HAZARD SEVERITY ZONE MAPS [J. HEILMAN] - 1) Direct staff to research the impacts of the 2025 State Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps on West Hollywood property owners, including conducting targeted outreach to seek feedback from property owners in the new zones about any direct impacts they have experienced; 2) Direct staff to identify and evaluate opportunities for the City to join a coalition of California cities and elected officials requesting that the State Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the Office of the State Fire Marshal reconsider or refine the 2025 FHSZ maps and the process for updating these maps in the future; and 3) Direct staff to return to the City Council with an update.
The City Council is considering the impact of updated State Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps on West Hollywood property owners. This could affect property insurance rates and building regulations, potentially increasing costs for homeowners in newly designated high-risk areas. The city may join a coalition to advocate for map revisions, which could mitigate these impacts.
If you own property in West Hollywood, the updated fire hazard maps might classify your property as higher risk, potentially increasing your insurance premiums or affecting your ability to make certain renovations. The city is exploring advocacy efforts to challenge these classifications, which could help reduce these impacts.
